Maintaining positivity isn’t easy and I totally get that. It’s a constant challenge that requires a lot of focus and the right intentions. But being positive is a choice, a decision made to see the bright side of life.
We’ve all received the well-meaning advice to always stay positive and sometimes it can seem a little unrealistic. This is especially when life has a way of throwing curveballs ever so often - positivity can then be nothing more than wishful thinking.
As humans, we have been hard-wired to focus on threats (the negatives) instead of seeing what’s in front of us that’s good. Even when negativity is all that we can see at times, we have a choice to either stand there helpless or step up and come out swinging.
Here are a couple of tools that have helped me stay on the bright side, even on the most stressful days when I just feel like crawling back into bed instead of confronting my problems.
1. Cultivate an attitude of gratitude
Take some time to acknowledge the good things in your life, no matter how small. Use gratitude as a cue to shift gears and think about something positive in your life.
2. Set your intentions
The things you focus on in your day can manifest positivity that you need in your life. Surround yourself with positive energy, whether it’s through friends, your favourite food, or a good book that can put you back on the train of positive thoughts.
3. Surround yourself with family and friends
When I’m stressed or feeling down, there are only a few people that I would want to lean on and turn to for support. Sometimes all you need are people you can count on, a shoulder to lean on, or just a funny joke from someone you love to get you back on track.
4. Find what works for you
There are so many positive things out there that can help brighten your day. It could be a walk in the park, watching a funny movie, or having an app that sends you daily affirmations and upbeat messages. At the end of the day, it’s about what works for you!
Being positive is truly a state of mind, but it is definitely something personal. I hope these ideas have given you a little bit of inspiration on how to keep looking forward with a smile. Keep putting your intentions towards positivity and you won’t regret it!
